Description

Funny and poignant, this 2001 Newbery Honor novel captures life in a quirky Southern town as Opal and her mangy dog, Winn-Dixie, strike upwardly friendships among the locals. (Ages viii and up)

The summertime Opal and her male parent, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket—and comes out with a dog. A large, ugly, suffering dog with a sterling sense of sense of humor. A domestic dog she dubs Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, the preacher tells Opal ten things virtually her absent-minded female parent, i for each year Opal has been alive. Winn-Dixie is ameliorate at making friends than anyone Opal has ever known, and together they encounter the local librarian, Miss Franny Block, who in one case fought off a bear with a copy of WAR AND PEACE. They meet Gloria Dump, who is nearly blind but sees with her heart, and Otis, an ex-con who sets the animals in his pet shop loose after hours, and then lulls them with his guitar.

Opal spends all that sugariness summer collecting stories nigh her new friends and thinking about her mother. But because of Winn-Dixie or perhaps considering she has grown, Opal learns to let go, just a fiddling, and that friendship—and forgiveness—tin can sneak upward on you like a sudden summertime storm.

Recalling the fiction of Harper Lee and Carson McCullers, here is a funny, poignant, and utterly genuine first novel from a major new talent.

Virtually the Author

Kate DiCamillo says of writing Because OF WINN-DIXIE, "I was living in an apartment where no dogs were allowed. As a event, I was suffering from a serious instance of 'dog withdrawal.' One nighttime, before I went to slumber, I heard this little girl's voice (with a Southern accent) say, 'I accept a domestic dog named Winn-Dixie.' When I woke upwards the next morning time, the vocalization was all the same talking, and I started writing down what India Opal Buloni was telling me. The volume is (I promise) a hymn of praise to dogs, friendship, and the Due south."
